Bahati Member of Parliament Kimani Ngunjiri wants public school teachers who are on strike to stop engaging in secret private tuition while on strike.
Ngunjiri accused some teachers of turning their home into private schools for parents who can afford to pay for their children’s private tuition.
Speaking at the Bahati CDF offices on Monday, the MP said that it was unfair to poor parents for teachers who are on strike to continue holding private tuitions since poor parents cannot afford it.
“If people are on strike then let them be on strike but this rubbish of some of them holding private tuition must stop because they are not being fair to poor parents. If they feel like they want to teach then they should go back to school and teach all the children or if they want to offer tuition then let them do it for free,” said Ngunjiri.
He added,“You cannot purport to be on strike while at the same time you are making money behind the curtains. All children in public schools must be treated the same”.
Ngunjiri urged the government crack down on teachers carrying out private tuition and punish them.
“The government banned private tuition or any other form of tuition and those doing it should be punished for violating the government’s directive,” he said.
