Gilgil MP Samuel Nderitu Mathenge wants the government to acknowledge and deal with the issue of rampant corruption at the Gilgil weighbridge and all other weigh stations in the country.
Reacting about the weekend Gilgil weighbridge drama which involved Nandi Hills MP Charles Keter and Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) officials, Mathenge, said that as much as the government is condemning Keter for his actions, it should also address what led to the scuffle.
He added, “People are making a lot of noise about what Keter did at Gigil but no one is asking if what he was complaining about was real. Even though we do not support his way of doing things but we must look into the real cause of the scuffle and that is corruption.”
Speaking at Gilgil town today morning Mathenge, said that corruption at the weighbridge is immense and called on the ethics and anti-corruption commission to deal with the issue decisively.
He added that as much as he does not support what Keter did, he also does not support Kenha officials who he said have turned the weighing station into a money making station.
“If we do not deal with the issue of corruption at the weighbridge then we will continue seeing more incidences like the Keter one,” said Mathenge.
He added, “Corruption at this place is something which is well known by both the government and even the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and they should do something about it. Crucifying Keter will just give officers at the weighbridge more power to do what they want but if action is taken against them, they will learn a lesson.”
