Moiben Member of Parliament Silas Tiren has asked the National government to put more funds to fight armyworm infestation in the region.
He said the current amount that was allocated for the same is not enough.
“It’s sad that the government only allocated Sh50 million to fight armyworms in the whole country. This amount is very little and cannot even be enough for a constituency,” said Tiren in Eldoret town, Monday.
The Jubilee MP said hundreds of acres of land in Moiben and Turbo constituencies have so far been affected by the armyworms and if nothing is done Kenya will face serious food shortage next year.
“The National government should give Sh1 billion emergency funds for farmers to purchase pesticides to fight the worms since they are very expensive and farmers cannot afford them,” added Tiren.
He further called upon the National government to be allocating at least 10 percent of its budget to agriculture as per the Maputo declaration which Kenya is a signatory.
