Kilifi North MP Owen Baya has threatened to table a bill to push for the secession of the Coast region. According to Baraka FM, the lawmaker argued that the Coast region has been marginalized since independence, adding that residents have no reason to be proud of being Kenyans. The new development comes after a section of leaders from the region under the leadership of Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi said they will push for secession if the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) does not heed to the calls of the opposition to cancel the rerun.Speaking in Mwarakaya and Madunguni, Baya who succeeded Gideon Mung’aro, said the time has come for the leaders from the region to free their people from ‘colonial rule’. The lawmaker said Coast residents have suffered from discrimination, adding that the government has done little to improve their livelihoods.“We have seen the discrimination that the national government has been doing to the Coastal people in terms of distribution of resources,” said Baya.He claimed that the repeat presidential election will be a sham after IEBC failed to adhere to the demands of the opposition. Kingi had earlier said they will follow the law in pushing for secession.
