Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir has appealed to parents in the constituency to be vigilant as heavy rains continue to pound the region.Nassir, who on Tuesday launched an environmental program to unblock sewage systems in the constituency, noted that the heavy rains might cause floods which could pose a risk to school going children.He said some areas in the constituency especially Morotto and Mburu kenge slums in Tudor are flood-risk areas and urged residents to exercise caution.The MP said the heavy rains that have been predicted by the meteorological department may render some residential areas inhabitable and called on parents to accompany their children to school.“We should not take the early warning systems for granted, let us be very careful and protect the young ones,” said Nassir.He also appealed to teachers to ensure all risk areas within school compounds are well inspected to avoid floods which may interfere with learning activities.“Teachers should be vigilant and in case the school compounds get flooded, they should immediately report the matter to the county disaster management team for action,” he added.Meanwhile, the Kenya Red Cross Mombasa branch has sent its disaster response team to most part of the county in a bid to ensure all emergencies that may arise are responded to on time.Red Cross Mombasa branch coordinator Mohammed Rajab said some areas in Mishomoroni and Mtopanga in Kisauni and Kipevu area within Changamwe experienced floods on Tuesday evening, adding that locals have been put on high alert.This comes after the weatherman said heavy rainfall of more than 30mm is expected in various parts of the Coast region.
