Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir has called on the US Embassy and National Police Service to release the CCTV footage showing what transpired during the attack on a GSU officer outside the embassy on Thursday.
According to Nassir, releasing the footage will not only help in setting the records straight but also reduce anxiety among citizens.
Speaking at Haki Africa offices in Mombasa after receiving a draft Prevention of Torture Bill from Human rights activist, Nassir asked the government not to hide anything from the public.
“Let the public know. There is no need to hide anything. The more you keep the public in the dark, the worse it for everyone,” he said on Thursday, as quoted by The Star.
Haki Africa executive director Hussein Khalid said the draft pushes for decent treatment of individuals suspected of committing a crime as well as prevents torture.
Khalid questioned why the government had decided to keep the CCTV footage out of the public domain, yet they need to know the truth about their lives.
“What we fail to understand up until now is why the CCTV footage has not been made public,” said Khalid.
