Awendo MP Walter Owino has told the government to give farmers funds which they can use to buy shares from the Sony SugarCcompany if it has to be privatised.
Speaking during a funeral at North Sakwa in Awendo constituency on Thursday, the legislator said the government must be ready to give farmers money to buy the company’s share in case it has insisted on privatisation or leave the company in the hand of the county government.
Owino said the privatisation of the sugar miller is not only an issue of the government but it’s also the issue which must need the attention of the local sugarcane farmers and the company staffs.
The MP maintained that they want the government to come out clear on how they want to do the privatisation and how the interest of the farmers will be safeguarded.
He said there are grave issues which must be addressed before the government thinks of privatizing the company.
Among the pertinent issues, he said must be dealt with urgently, are land issues.
The MP asserted that they will not allow the government to sell the community land donated to Sony Sugar Company.
