Lagdera Constituency  MP Mohamed Shidiye has urged the national government to increase budgetary allocation to drought mitigation programs.

The MP says that the government needs to allocate more money to mitigate perennial drought that hit some parts of the country especially in Northern Kenya.

According to the MP, annual budgetary allocation to the National Drought Management Authority (NDMA) is not sufficient to mitigate drought in the country.

Shidiye  notes that the country’s food security  will be assured if drought and famine is properly mitigated.

The MP said that it is unfortunate that Kenyans are at risk of dying of starvation at this age and time.

“The national government must allocate more money into drought mitigation programs to cushion Kenyans from famine,” he said as quoted by the Standard.

The MP accused Jubilee government of allegedly wasting money on unnecessary projects while millions of Kenyans are facing starvation.

“The Jubilee government has to be realistic and come up with urgent measures to alleviate the biting drought,” he said.

Over 2 Million Kenyans are facing starvation as a result of the biting drought that has hit 13 counties across the country.

The national government says that proper measures have been taken to alleviate the drought.

The government has since declared the ravaging drought a national disaster and promised to double relief food distribution in the worst hit areas.

According to the national government, Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo, Tana River, Kilifi, Samburu, Baringo, Turkana, Lamu, Kwale and Kitui and are the worst drought hit counties.
