A Mombasa High Court has acquitted two suspects charged with the murder of 60 people in relation to the Mpeketoni terror attack.
Judge Martin Muya acquitted the two, Mr Mahadi Swaleh Mahadi alias Jesus and Mr Dyna Salim Suleiman for lack of enough evidence linking them to the killings.
Judge Muya in his ruling said the testimony of more than 30 people showed that the suspects were not involved in the killings.
The judge further said that the investigation done on their communication gadgets indicated that Mr Mahadi was not in Lamu at the time of the attack.
“Investigations conducted by the police in relation to the case against the two accused persons were done poorly. The court finds the accused persons not guilty and acquits them on all 60 murder counts,” said Muya.
The two were accused of being behind the killing of 60 men and women in June 2014 at Mpeketoni Township and Kaisari Village in Lamu County.
Mr Mahadi denied the charges before the court saying he was not involved in killing anyone or financing the attacks.
He told the court he only heard of the attack through the media, adding that he never participated in the attacks.
