A middle-aged man was last night caught by residents while trying to rob a M-pesa shop in Machakos town.
The suspect tried to run after the residents caught him robbing the shop, but was captured and beaten heavily before police rescued him.
Confirming the incident, Machakos Mjini assistant chief Fedelis Muli said the man tried to escape after committing the crime but residents managed to catch him.
“The man tried to rob M-pesa shop which is located near T-tot hotel in Machakos town," Muli said.
"The attendant raised alarm and alerted the residents about the incident. The residents managed to catch the suspect and they severely injured him before he was rescued by police.”
The area chief, Joshua Kimeu, urged residents not to take the law into their hands. He told the residents to report such incidents to the police. He revealed that other robbers had robbed another M-pesa shop on Sunday noon.
“The man had robbed the shop and tried to run but the residents caught up with him. This incident has occurred several hours after another incident in which three men had robbed M-pesa shop and one of them was killed by the residents while the two managed to escape.
"I urge the residents not to take laws into their hands but they should hand over the suspects to the police.”
