West Mugirango MP James Gesami has assured the Nyamira County tea growers of support in order to revive the deteriorating market of the commodity.
Speaking to farmers in Kebirigo market where he presented a cheque of Sh150,000 to Kebirigo buying centre, Gesami took issue over the management of the area’s main cash crop in the recent years which has seen its price drop drastically.
Gesami said that it was unfair for the farmers to receive as low as Sh8 per kilogramme in Nyanza region while in the Central region farmers received up to a tune of Sh32 per kilogramme in the last year’s bonus payment.
“I want to push for a common market for our tea in the assembly so as we have a uniform price for our crops all round the country. We should put credible people who we can entrust with our products,” he said.
Gesami, however, asked the residents not to uproot the plantation but instead urged them to continue planting as he promised them of a bright future in the farming sector.
The legislator has so far awarded almost all tea buying centres in his constituency with Sh150,000 which will be used to renovate the houses which the farmers use to collect their produce from the CDF kitty.
