The women have accused the MPs of playing politics with the Bill.

“It is clear that MPs are not willing to pass the gender Bill because of the personal interests,” said Tabitha Kamau, a resident in Kiambu Town.

Ms Kamau said that failure by MPs to pass the Bill has seen women denied key opportunities in leadership and governance.

She added that the constitution provides for equal representation in leadership and that the two-third Bill was to provide for the same.

“We don’t know what the MPs want for them to pass the two-third gender Bill,” said Stella Kinyua, a women coordinator in Tinga’ng’a Ward.

Ms Kinyua said that it is time the MPs passed the Bill to enable equal representation on matters of leadership and governance in public institutions.

On Wednesday, MPs failed to pass the Bill as low number of lawmakers were in the House to debate and pass the two-thirds gender bill..

Only 242 MPs were in the House with 192 voting for the Bill, 28 voting against and 19 abstaining.

National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi ruled that the Bill will be discussed and voted again on Thursday next week.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had earlier called on MPs to pass the Bill to allow for equal representation in terms of gender in government institutions.

The two-thirds gender rule principle provides for equal representation in leadership and governance positions in public institutions.

The rule provides that no gender should be more than two-thirds of those in elective and appointive public positions.
