The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has been barred from slashing MPs salaries and allowances.

This was decided on by High court judge, Justice George Odunga, who gave a temporal order stopping the commission from effecting their gazette notice.

In a gazette notice dated July 7, 2017, the commission had indicated that they will be reducing salaries and other allowances for the members of parliament, in what the commission described as cutting on annual costs.

“The commission has made a far-reaching review of remuneration and benefits for State officers. The Commission recommends the payment of a fixed salary structure guided by the performance of the economy,” said former SRC chair Ms. Serem when she released the new pay structure in July.

PSC, however, took the matter to court today, Friday morning, classifying the matter under urgent.

PSC argued that the Serem-led commission failed to properly conduct a study on labor market efficiency, dynamics on the prevailing economic situation and doing a comprehensive job evaluation before setting the new structures.

The PSC argued that the SRC was overstepping its mandate, and taking over what the service, PSC, should be doing.
