Speaking on Citizen TV on Friday, the MPs, led by Kenneth Okoth (Kibra) want the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to immediately take action against police officers captured assaulting locals.

The MPs say that police were not justified to use force even as they search for the stolen guns.

“It is unfortunate that police at this time and era can assault innocent Kenyans,” said Nakuru nominated Senator Martha Wangari.

Senator Wangari said that the officers involved in the operation should be investigated and disciplined for their conduct.

Ms Wangari asked the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to launch investigations into the alleged assault of locals in Mumias.

Homa Bay MP Peter Kaluma accused the police of using excessive force in their operations.

“The police force has not reformed and we want Boinnet and others to get rid of rogue officers who violate human rights,” he said.

Mr Kaluma said that police have no right to beat up and assault innocent Kenyans.

“It is saddening that police can decide to assault innocent Kenyans instead of pursuing real criminals,” he added.

According to media reports, police are allegedly accused of assaulting women beating up children, killing animals and destroying property in an ongoing operation being done to recover the stolen guns.

On Tuesday, unknown people raided Booker Police post in Mumias and stole 7 G3 rifles with 180 rounds of ammunition.

A police officer was also injured during the raid.

The stolen guns have not been recovered with police extend the search beyond Kakamega.
