National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, has directed Members of parliament to conclude the vetting of Chief Justice nominee David Maraga by Wednesday next week.
Muturi has called on the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee to name a specific date when the approval hearing will be concluded before Maraga is accepted or rejected.
"I cannot over-emphasize the need to expedite this process of appointment of a substantive Chief Justice, considering that there is a vacancy in this position and in that of the Deputy Chief Justice at at a time when the substantive office holders ought to perform certain statutory obligations," Muturi is quoted by Nation.
Since his nomination by the JSC, Maraga has received praise from a section of leaders who stated that he was the right man for the job.
Majority leader Aden Duale two weeks ago stated that Jubilee lawmakers will approve the appointment of the Kisumu Court of Appeal judge.
Maraga's name was presented to the national assembly on Monday by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
If successful Maraga will succeed retired CJ Willy Mutunga as the President of the Judiciary.
