Schools will be ranked according to their categories in terms of facilities, staffing and other parameters.

“This is designed to ensure that schools are ranked according to the level of facilities at their disposal so as bring out unique challenges of schools and inform policy decisions on resource allocations,” Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa, the sponsor of the Bill said.

Ranking was banned by former Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi in a bid to curb cheating.

However, according to Wamalwa, ranking is in conformity with the right to information, and can help the government and educationists identify areas for improvement.

The Bill also includes ranking of schools in co-curricular activities such as sports and drama.

The Education committee, chaired by Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege, endorsed the Bill, which was approved after receiving overwhelming support from MPs.
