An MP is proposing that the number of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) commissioners be cut to curb wrangles and differences.
Kanini Kega (Kieni, Jubilee) on Tuesday said the high number of top ranking IEBC officials is to blame for the recurrent differences at the electoral agency.
Currently, by law, the IEBC top organ is constituted by seven officials, the chairperson, vice chairperson and five commissioners.
But Kanini says the number should be reduced to five- the chairperson, his or her deputy, and three commissioners.
"Let's first wait for Mr Wafula Chebukati to leave office, I will propose an amendment to the law so that we only have five people at the top, the chairperson, vice chairperson and three commissioners.
He made the remarks as he addressed the press in Nairobi on Tuesday.
The IEBC is currently embattled following the resignation of three commissioners on Monday. The three are Consolata Nkatha Maina, Paul Kurgat, and Margaret Mwachanya. The cited Chebukati's incompetence as the reason for their departure.
Their resignation has now left the IEBC with three officials- Mr Chebukati and commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu.
By law, Chebukati and the two commissioners cannot manage the electoral agency and the only option for them is to resign and pave way for the reconstitution of the State agency.
