The National Assembly is set to crack the whip on MPs who skip committee meetings by discharging them from the respective committees.
The National Assembly Procedure and House Rules Committee chaired by the speaker, Justin Muturi has resolved this measure to ensure house rules are followed to the latter.
Members who wish to be absent will now be required to have a written permission from the speaker, or chairman of the committee. Failure to which will lead to suspension by the selection committee.
House rules state that members of parliament who fail to attend four consecutive committee meetings with no written permission to be discharged immediately.
Muturi on a number of occasions has called on chairperson of committees to implement the house. The speaker has been on record saying that some MPs are only present when signing the sitting allowance.
Residents of Kibera have, however, urged the speaker to be more firm on such members of parliament.
“We don’t want empty talk. The speaker should ensure that such members of parliament are punished for their actions because they are just receiving allowance money without doing any work," said Aggrey Ageyo.
