Chief Justice nominee David Maraga will know his fate on Tuesday evening when members of Parliament debate his candidature.
According to kbctv.co.ke, the National Assembly has planned an extra sitting starting 6:45pm after members familiarise themselves with the report to be tabled by the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee.
The committee vetted Maraga on Thursday last week where he was asked a range of questions including petitions from three petitioners who wanted the MPs to reject his candidature for Chief Justice, claiming unfairness in his past ruling in the killing of the then Ainamoi MP David Too in January 2008 and case backlog in Eldoret.
It is widely expected that Maraga will sail through since he is perceived to enjoy support from both Jubilee and Cord lawmakers.
If approved, Maraga will become the second CJ under the 2010 Constitution to replace Willy Mutunga who opted for early retirement in June.
If Maraga’s nomination is approved by both the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee and the committee of the whole House, he will then be formally appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta as the country’s new Chief Justice.
