The drug abuse menace has enslaved thousands of youths and arrested socio-economic development in many parts of the country.

The Kenya Parliamentary Human Rights Caucus has, however, called for the harmonisation of various laws on drugs and narcotics in the country. The legislators say different laws in the sector were making it difficult to fight the drugs menace that has affected thousands of youth.

According to Matungulu MP, Stephen Mule, the Health Bill, which is currently before the National Assembly, should be merged with others in order to effectively deal with the menace.

These sentiments which were echoed by caucus chairman, Agostino Neto during a workshop on harm reduction for drugs. Neto termed some laws as conflicting making it hard to curb the vice. He, therefore, urged all concerned agencies to work together in order to win the fight against drug abuse adding that drug addicts would often require the drugs they use as part of overcoming their effects.

On his part, the executive director of the Kenya AIDs NGO's Consortium (KANCO), Allan Ragi said they were working with agencies that do harm reduction as one way of reducing new infections among drug addicts.
