Leaders of the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) have said that they want to hold a meeting with security officers from all the six counties in the Coast region ahead of the August general elections.

The leaders said that they would like to convene a meeting with Coast regional coordinator Nelson Marwa and all six county commissioners to discuss how they can ensure there is peace before, during and after the next general election, The Star reports. In a statement signed by 13 officials of the group, the leaders said peace is important as we head to the elections.“We want to discuss how we will cooperate as citizens with the administration to ensure peace prevails before, during and after the general election,” read part of the statement. MRC was dormant until 2008 when it hit headlines after claiming that its members wanted to secede from Kenyan in order to become an independent state. The members claimed that the secession would allow the people of Coast region to liberate themselves from historical injustices including marginalisation among others. The group, which was using the slogan, Pwani Si Kenya, attracted public condemnation.Later on, the government declared the group illegal with its activities being considered a threat to national security.
