The Mombasa Republican Council (MRC) has accused Kaloleni MP Gunga Mwinga and his Nyali counterpart Hezron Awiti of using challenges facing the Mijikenda Community to gain political gain.
The council said it expects the duo to oversee the implementation of the law legalizing the sale of mnazi, instead of leading the community in holding demonstrations.
MRC deputy spokesman Richard Lewa said Mwinga is a competent lawyer who should organize a workshop to educate the vendors about the regulations that govern the drink, instead of mobilizing them to take part in protests.
“Any law passed has to have regulations. It is the duty of the MPs to ensure the mnazi vendors are properly educated on what they are allowed to do and what they are not,” he said, as quoted by The Star.
This comes after Awiti and Mwinga led vendors to protest against harassment by police officers in the region.
The two leaders called upon President Uhuru Kenyatta to address the issue, the same way he defended miraa farmers in the country.
