Mt Kenya governors have initiated a plan to revive passenger and cargo train services between Nairobi and Nanyuki.

Each of the eight counties will contribute Sh100 million for the Sh25 billion project.

Kiambu county boss Ferdinand Waititu welcomed the initiative saying it will drastically reduce the cost of transporting cargo, thus reducing the number of heavy trucks on the road.

"We intend to engage the national government and Kenya Railways to ensure the plan succeed. The new mode of transport will enable passengers to travel faster and cheaply," he said.

Waititu was speaking when the governors meet on Friday in Nanyuki, Laikipia County.

Speaking at the same event, Nyeri County boss Wahome Gakuru said they deliberated on how the 240 km meter gauge railway could become operational by 2018.

"The railway line will open inter-county trade due to ease of movement of people and goods," Gakuru said.
