An appeal has been made to the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KERRA) to erect bumps at Mukiriti market along General Kago road following frequent accidents.

Speaking to press on Thursday, Mount Kenya University lecturer John Mburu said that two people have been killed at the spot due over speeding along the road. Mburu noted that there is need to put bumps in order to avert loss of lives especially schoolchildren crossing the road daily.

Recently a parent and motorcyclist were hit by a vehicle and are nursing injuries in hospital. We need quick measures to avoid loss especially the school children”, said the lecturer. He revealed that the situation is further aggravated when students who ply along the road that is situated just opposite Thika technical move for lectures.

Contacted for comment, Thika youth development officer Laban Mwangi said that there was need to conduct road safety campaign in schools. Mwangi revealed that many motorists were not observing the speed limit especially in areas where there were schools and called upon the government to enforce the rules.

He said that he had contacted the Thika town police station deputy OCPD Mary Kiarie and had agreed to conduct road safety in some schools starting next week.

The speeding vehicles are a threat to our learners and it calls for concerted efforts to educate our children on how to cross the road to avoid loss of lives”, said Mwangi.
