A number of business moguls from the populous Mt. Kenya region are said to be secretly plotting to back KANU chairman Gideon Moi for 2022 presidential bid.
While Moi is yet to formally declare his interest, his allies have however already made it public that he will be running.
"KANU has not had candidates for the last three consecutive elections. This time round, we shall have and that is none other than Gideon," said Tiaty MP William Kamket.
So intriguing is his bid, that even Deputy President William Ruto, through his allies, has publicly waged a titanic war to tame him.
And indpendent investigations shows that the 'elite club' of businessmen see Moi as a soft target who can carter for their interests.
"They view Ruto as an emerging threat and an intruder in the club out to upset the status quo and who will not cater for their interests," a local paper reports.
Two Principal Secretaries, a former governor, a sitting governor and a member of influential family are said to have formed a secret committee to mobilise support for Moi.
Further, A Jubilee governor from South Rift, two sitting MPs from Nakuru are said to have started working with Mr. Moi.
Already, Moiben MP Silas Tiren has indicated that he may support Moi, following his decision to join the latter in welcoming Raila Odinga at Daniel Moi' Kabarak home.
"I have no problem with Gideon. He is a good leader and nobody should be stopped from running for any position," he said at a function in Eldoret.
While Ruto is hopeful of votes from Mt. Kenya, his matrix could be complicated should the plot work in Moi's favour.
Ex-Kiambu governor William Kabogo, has been quoted severally quashing Ruto's chances and at times, he blamed him for his loss to Ferdinand Waititu.
