The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital is adopting a new modern clinical waste management technology that uses microwaving to sterilize medical waste. 

The AMB 250 Ecosteryl Microwave Clinical Waste Management Plant Project is a Belgium Government funded project through the Ministry of Health. 

This makes the hospital which is the second biggest in the county to be the first one in East and Central Africa to use the new technology.

According to the Hospital's Director Dr. Wilson Aruasa, the new technology will improve the efficiency of clinical waste management that is in line with global best available technologies and best environmental practices.

"The adoption of this new technology will not only improve the management of clinical waste in the Hospital but will also support waste management from other medical facilities in Eldoret," said Dr. Aruasa on Friday.

"Being a non-burn technology, it is environmentally friendly. It will reduce the pollution associated with traditional burn technologies (incineration) in our premises and surrounding neighbourhood," he added.

The Ecosteryl equipment, apart from sterilizing the waste, reduces the volume of waste by 80% through its shredding and drying capabilities making it easy for the operators to handle the waste products. 

The installation, testing, and validation of the equipment that has a capacity to handle 250-300kg/h of waste have been completed and the Plant is to be commissioned soon.
