The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) will perform its first open heart surgery later this year.
Chief Executive Officer Wilson Aruasa Monday said the operation will save travelling expenses incurred by patients who seek the services abroad.
"We are set to perform the first open heart surgery in June this year with our own specialised doctors," he said.
Dr Aruasa said the hospital wants to subsidise the surgery costs for it to be affordable to every Kenyan.
"In foreign countries, open heart surgery is done at a cost of over Sh2 million, but we want to make it half or slightly lower," he said.
He added that they want to discourage Kenyans from seeking specialised services abroad, since Kenya also has qualified doctors who can offer the same services at a lower rate.
"I urge the national government through the Ministry of of Health to subsidise drugs used by heart patients since they are very expensive and unaffordable," he added.
He however urged Kenyans to apply for NHIF, since it will guarantee them quality services at a lower rate.
