The Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) workers have challenged the plot to withdraw the services of over 567 employees on contract.

This is in addition to ending the term of employment term of the hospital’s director Dr John Kibosia. The workers insist that Dr Kibosia’s exit, which will end next year, will compromise the fate of the employees who are yet to be put on permanent employment and cripple services at hospital.

They protested on Friday condemning the management board for the plot of wanting to cut down the number of employees especially those on contract term.

“We are saddened by the activities ongoing at MTRH. We were told by the board on Thursday that they conducted an interview on the director but we wonder why we were not involved in the process,” said Kennedy Orangi, Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) North Rift branch chairperson.

“Kibosia’s exit will be a challenge to the 567 workers on contract who deserve permanent employment and that staff of the hospital coordinate well under Kibosia. With his exit, there also might be a threat to the provision of extraneous allowances that was recently implemented,” he said.

Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Doctors Union (KMPDU) national treasurer Dr Daisy Korir said some workers have been working for more than 10 years and they deserve confirmation before others can be brought in.

“To be fair, let’s first confirm the ones who have been working in the hospital. They have enough qualifications and experience. Workers expect the management to focus on job evaluation and conclusion of the Collective Bargain Agreement (CBA) meant for nurses and doctors,” said Dr Korir.

She added that many workers are concerned that with a new management in place, the confirmation of those who have been working on contract will be challenged and maybe never get to be confirmed.
