Mucheru says that the government will upheld and promote media freedom in the country.

While condemning the recent reported attacks on journalists, the CS said that the culprits involved will be dealt with according to the law.

“Media freedom is not negotiable, and as a government, we will ensure there is a conducive environment for the media to work in,” said Mucheru during the inauguration of the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) Board held at the Intercontinental hotel in Nairobi on Thursday.

The CS observed that the government recognizes the role played by the media in the society.

He urged the MCK to work closely with other government agencies to ensure that security of journalists is guaranteed.

The CS said that the government will formulate proper policies in consultations with media stakeholders to promote the sector.

Mucheru at the same time challenged journalists and media houses to exercise objectivity in their work.

He said that objectivity should be the driving force of all media houses and journalists.

“With the 2017 elections nearing our appeal is to the media to ensure they exercise objectivity and adhere to the code of conduct,” he added.

Cases of journalists being attacked and even killed in their line of duty have been reported in the recent past prompting the scribes to hold peaceful protests demanding their security.
