Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi has termed as suspect the push by a section of MPs to postpone the date for the 2017 general election saying it could lead to chaos.d Boundaries Commission has scheduled the elections for August 7, 2017 some MPs are vouching for the postponement of the elections with a Bill on the same expected to be tabled in Parliament soon.
“Reports that the National Assembly is plotting to introduce an amendment to postpone elections scheduled next year are not only alarming but curious as it is aimed at aborting the people's will," said Mudavadi.
He added that the Constitution provided that general elections be held each first Tuesday of August after every fifth year and that this date embodied in the Constitution was meant to set a norm and predictability for all elections.
“The ANC will not entertain and does not support clandestine attempts to abort the election date. Any clandestine connivance to change the election date at the whim of a few is betrayal of the struggle for democracy and mutilation of the Constitution,” he said in a statement.
The ANC leader added, “Kenyans cannot afford a reversal of such magnitude just so some can stay in office a little longer.”
He accused MPs 'being used' in the scheme as not only selfish but also completely wrong.
“Unfortunately both the ruling party and opposition haven’t been forceful against designs to change the election date on flimsy and ridiculous excuses such school calendar and budget. It is suspicious how clumsy Parliament amended the Elections Act and put in place unworkable deadlines,” he said as quoted by the Nation.
