Hours after details emerged that NASA leader Raila Odinga had refused to take oath of office as president during a closed door meeting held on Saturday at the Maanzoni lodge in Machakos, ANC party leader has sent a statement that nearly defines the opposition’s plot.
On Saturday Odinga and Mudavadi met several opposition supporters from across the country where he rejected the proposed swearing in parallel to President Kenyatta’s second term oath of office.
Mr Odinga urged the ardent resistance supporters not to go for such a confrontation and many had been left wondering what was next for the people’s assembly which they had anticipated would have Mr Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka as president and deputy unveiled on Tuesday.
According to a statement by the ANC party leader on Sunday morning, the opposition had only set the formation of the people’s assembly as a starting point of a process through which the country shall define a fresh destination.
If Odinga was to be sworn in on Tuesday as earlier reports had indicated, this would have meant the opposition was seeking to form a parallel government, a path Mudavadi has clarifies the opposition is not keen on following even as they vow now to recognize Uhuru Kenyatta's leadership.
The expected role of an opposition, he said, had failed to take full charge and this had prompted their leadership to bring the people directly on board.
“If checks and balances do not work as they should, then the people are compelled to go back to the drawing board. The people’s assembly is that drawing board. It is not a parallel government; it is not an alternative parliament. It is a process of charting political destiny,” read the statement by Mudavadi.
Mr Odinaga during the Saturday meeting is said to have urged the leaders to fuel further the use of people's assembly, civil disobedience and boycotts turning down the swearing whose script James Orenog, Miguna Miguna and Muthama were reportedly drafting.
