Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi has agreed to join Raila Odinga in the Cord Coalition to form a super alliance to face off with Jubilee Party in 2017.
Speaking in Machakos after a joint National Executive Committee (NEC) and Parliamentary Group Meeting on Friday, Mudavadi said the opposition must unite to ensure a win in the next election.
ANC approved the formation of the alliance with the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (Cord) where they could also field a single presidential candidate in the August 2017 elections.
Mudavadi said, “The National Super Alliance (NASA) or Muungano Maalum is a serious debate we would like to engage in particularly with those in the opposition. The whole idea is to have a more inclusive and robust political dispensation.”
The party will have a team leading the talks on the same. Mudavadi called on and encouraged other party members to join them to give them the muscle they need to win next year.
Among the issues discussed in the meeting were the ANC Policy Paper and ANC Women Charter both of which make ANC the only party in Kenya that has outlined and makes its campaign issues public according to the party’s Secretary General Geoffrey Atotsi.
“The Women Charter is a first in Kenyan politics affirming ANC’s commitment to women participatory empowerment,” said Atotsi.
The party is now urging those who want to join it to do so before February 2017 as the law requires.
Atotsi reiterated the party’s support for its leader as he starts a journey to unify the opposition against the Jubilee saying such an alliance will create a space for all those against misrule by Jubilee.
He accused Jubilee of condoning rampant corruption and having a ruinous and extravagant economic model of borrowing to eat while protecting economic saboteurs.
