Amani National Congress party leader Musalia Mudavadi has mourned the passing away of Winnie Madikizela, South Africa’s anti-apartheid activist and the wife to former freedom fighter Nelson Mandela.

The NASA coalition co-principal, through his post on Twitter on Monday, noted that the deceased was a symbol of courage to all.

According to Mudavadi, the late Winnie Mandela was also hope for the oppressed.

“Winnie Mandela A symbol of courage to all and hope for the oppressed. Rip Mama,” tweeted Mudavadi.

The wife of the former south Africa president, Mandela died in Johannesburg, South Africa at the age of 81.

According to family spokesman, Victor Dlamini, the African activist died in the hospital after a long illness since the beginning of the year.

“It is with profound sadness that we inform the public that Mrs. Winne Madikizela-Mandela passed away at the Netcare Milpark Hospital, Johannesburg, south Africa on Monday,” 

"She died after a long illness, for which she had been in and out of hospital since the start of the year. She succumbed peacefully in the early hours of Monday afternoon.”

Though her place in history was full of controversy and accusations of violence, the late played a very vital role during the struggle to end apartheid in south Africa.
