He said Castro was an iconic figure who gave meaning and hope to Third World countries and its people.

"Castro was the voice that revolutionised world affairs for decades and ensured that their concerns were heard," said Mudavadi in a statement.

His death, added Mudavadi, is an end to an era.

The late Castro who ruled Cuba as a one-party state for almost 50 years, died Friday aged 90.

According to BBC, "The commander in chief of the Cuban revolution died at 22:29 hours this evening (03:29 GMT Saturday)," President Raul Castro said.

Raul, Fidel's brother, took over the mantle from Castro in 2008.
