Farmers belonging to Jet Scheme project in Muguga, Kikuyu in Kiambu County have benefited from twenty dairy goats from an international European based NGO. The chairman of the project Waweru Tulaga while receiving the twenty goats on behalf of members asked the Kiambu county government to put emphasis on dairy goat farming saying that it is becoming a reliable source of sustainable income. “I request the county government to help us uplift dairy goat farming in this area in terms of market research and we will use the land at our disposal to implement the plan. The white collar jobs are increasingly becoming scarce and we have to think of other alternative ways to eke a living”, Waweru said. According to the group, the plan is to interbreed the twenty goats so that their lambs can be given to the other group members who did not get. “I believe according to the training we have been given about the rearing of these goats, we will be able to interbreed them fast and give to our fellow members. With this we will be able to have plenty of milk that we can market as a group”, says Jane Wanjiru a member of the group. Dairy goat farming has been on the rise in the area as more farmers embrace it moving away from the traditional dairy cows farming. The goats are said to produce more than five litres of milk a day and they can feed on a variety of feeds.
