A section of Gikambura residents have now opted to chew miraa since liquor in the drinking dens has become unaffordable.
According to Dennis Kinoti who sells ‘muguka’ at Gikambura Shopping Centre, his customers have doubled in comparison to last year.
“I normally sell muguka to more than 200 people in a day. Most of my customers are between 20-35 and come as early as 10am to purchase the now preferred ‘time-passi ‘substance in the town,” he said.
Kinoti said that the ratio of his women customers to that of men customers is 1:5 and that he does not sell his product to anyone below 18 years of age.
He said that most of his customers initially preferred consuming alcohol until it was banned last year.
Last year President Uhuru Kenyatta initiative of eradicating counterfeit liquor was positively achieved.
However, some of Gikambura residents hang around the drinking places waiting for the ‘Mututho time’ so as to quench their thirst.
