Communities on the Muhoroni and Nandi boundaries have been urged to coexistence to avoid tribal clashes.
Muhoroni MP Onyango Koyoo and Ogra Foundation Director Dr Hezron Otieno McObewa asked the communities to embrace peaceful coexistence.
The leaders said it’s only through working together that we can build the country's economy.
Koyoo asked the neighbouring communities to live peacefully and stop constant conflicts. He deplored constant attacks on residents at the border.
Koyoo said Nandi county residents have persistently occupied land belonging to Muhoroni communities, with people being attacked and cane farms set on fire.
“We want our neighbours to stop these attacks on Muhoroni residents. We need to live in harmony,” he said.
Koyoo emphasised the need for peaceful co-existence between Luo and Nandi communities living at the border.
“Regardless of your ethnic groups, it is absolutely important that you cultivate peaceful co-existence with your neighbour. We need to respect each other for the sake of peace and development,” he said.
Recently, Tom Jerry Abuodha (46) was killed in Miwani when the neighbouring communities clashed over animal theft.
McObewa said the communities have historically lived with one another and have no reasons to fight.
Speaking when he visited the bereaved family, he appealed for peace and harmony at the Nandi and Luo border in Miwani area. McObewa promised to support the education of his children.
Abuodha left behind a widow and five children of which some of them are still continuing with their education.
He says the persistent chaos and deaths occasioned by cattle rustling should not be allowed to escalate since the two communities have always been neighbours all along.
He has however challenged the security apparatus in the area to work extra hard to ensure that the thorny issue of cattle rustling is dealt with once and for all. Locals accused the police in Miwani police station of doing nothing to quell the recent violence that led to the death of one person from Miwani.
McObewa said Ogra Foundation through its education programme will support two of children to continue their education.
He also met the families of those who left their homes in Miwani fearing more chaos and promised to give them non-food items such as blankets and mosquito nets.
