A statue of Muindi Mbingu was Wednesday unveiled by Machakos governor Alfred Mutua in Machakos town.
The statue has been constructed by the county government as the governor promised last month.
"Someone once said that we study history so that we can compare it with the present and make decisions of the future. This is very true. We are who we are today because of the actions and sacrifices of heroes such as Muindi Mbingu," Mutua said during the ceremony.
Samuel Muindi Mbingu led the Akamba community in demonstrating the seizure of their cattle by the colonial government when the destocking policy was implemented. The cows were then released.
Later Muindi Mbingu was arrested and detained at Lamu Island after being accused of leading the Mau May movement. Later in 1953, Muindi Mbingu was brutally murdered by the colonial government spurning outrage by the Mau May fighters.
"There is a street in the City of Nairobi County called Muindi Mbingu street; And now in Machakos, where he was born, we have the Muindi Mbingu statue at this Muindi Mbingu Garden," Mutua added.
The governor was accompanied by hundreds of residents, county officials and relatives of Muindi Mbingu.
