Multichoice has frozen prices of its DStv and GOtv subscriptions in the latest bid to guard against customer exits in an increasingly competitive Kenyan pay television market.
The company Wednesday said in a statement that it would not effect any annual price increases this year. Multichoice attributed the decision to the “rising cost of living.”
“Our valued customers are also suffering so we want to do our bit to relieve the added financial pressure by not increasing the price of their annual subscriptions,” said MultiChoice Kenya corporate affairs manager Philip Wahome.
The company said its key markets on the continent are facing “harsh macro-economic headwinds”.Multichoice announced price cuts last year in what was seen as a reaction to the entry of new pay TV providers in the country.
The company bills its customers in dollars. The price freeze means that subscribers of DStv’s most expensive premium bouquet will continue to pay Sh8,180 per month.
Compact Plus customers will pay Sh5,425, Compact subscribers will pay Sh3,550 while the Family bouquet will cost Sh1,900. DStv’s cheapest bouquet, Access, will continue to pay Sh1,050 every month.
GOtv customers will pay Sh699 for the most expensive package while the GOtv Value and Lite customers will pay Sh470 and Sh160 respectively.
Multichoice owner, Naspers, has tried to gain a bigger slice of the online streaming business through Showmax, a video-on-demand service with subscription prices of up to Sh880 per month.
