Family of the former Ukambani Kingpin Mulu Mutisya has called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to recognize the legendary contribution to the country as they mark his 14th anniversary.
Mutisya’s youngest daughter Irene Mulu said they were worried that their father’s name was fading away despite the contribution he made not only to Kamba community but the entire country during his time.
Mulu urged the president to give some of them (Mulu Mutisya) children government jobs through nominations or appointments into various available state positions like ministries and parastatals so as to make their late father’s name remain relevant.
“Our father, the late Mulu Mutisya was very close to the Kenya’s founding President Mzee Jommo Kenyatta who nominated him as an MP in 1974. He was so loyal to Kenyatta that he introduced him to retired President Daniel Moi who equally issued him several nominations and appointments in his KANU government where he served until 2002 when Mwai Kibaki took over. Mutisya retired in politics in the same year before he died on March 23, 2004,” Mulu said.
She said her family had been ignored by the government since his father’s demise.
“The government should do something to our family, the President should remember us. Nominate or appoint our siblings in your government,” Mulu added.
Mulu said they are all well educated hence qualify for various state jobs.
“Mulu Mutisya was a staunch KANU member, he retired in politics in 2002 after KANU was sent home and Kibaki took over. That is when he passed the Ukambani kingpinship mantle to the Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka,” said she.
According to the daughter, the family has been ignored and forgotten since President Moi’s reign.
Mulu said the immediate former President Mwai Kibaki completely neglected the family.
She said they were once denied access when they went to see him at Statehouse.
Mulu urged Kalonzo to unite the Kamba community as his late father did.
“During my father’s reign, he could reconcile Kamba leaders whenever they disagreed. He could call him to his rural home to reconcile, now Ukambani is divided,” Mulu said.
Mulu spoke to Hivisasa on the phone on Thursday.
She said Mulu Mutisya’s monument erected in Machakos town by Governor Alfred Mutua and unveiled by President Uhuru Kenyatta is not enough.
Mulu said Mutua’s government should tarmac the dilapidated Wamuyu – Kalawa Road that leads to their rural home in Wamunyu, Mwala Sub county.
She thanked President Moi , former Machakos senator Johnston Muthama and Kalonzo for standing with the family.
The late Mulu Mutisya’s 14th anniversary will be marked tomorrow March 23, 2018.
The legendary who died at 80 is survived by nine children and widow Elizabeth Mulu.
