Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s decision to impose a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Lamu, Garissa and Tana River Counties has continued to elicit mixed reactions from different factions.

Kenya Patriots Party governor candidate Danson Mungatana is among the leaders who have opposed the move. Mungatana said Tana River is not an Al-Shabaab hideout and asked the CS to rethink the decision."As leaders of Tana River County, we oppose the imposition of a curfew in our county because all of us know that Al-Shabaab militants are in Boni Forest in Lamu County, not Tana River," said Mr Mungatana, as quoted by the Standard. "The curfew should have affected places adjacent to Lamu, not this far where we have not experienced any terrorist incidents,” he added.Mungatana’s sentiments were reiterated by Chama Cha Uzalendo senator candidate Maur Bwanamaka. The two were speaking at Fanjua village in Kinakomba ward on Sunday. This comes after National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders asked the government to lift curfews ahead of the August polls, arguing that the curfews will lead to voter apathy in their strongholds.
