Tana River governor hopeful Danson Mungatana has urged the national government to guarantee security of Kenyans as the country heads to the August 8 general election.
Mungatana said Kenyans have to be assured of their safety before, during and after the August 8 polls. In an interview with the People daily on Friday, Mungatana said the government has the responsibility of ensuring the safety of its citizens. He observed that suspected terror threats, border conflict and cattle rustling cases being reported in some parts of the country are causing fear ahead of the August 8 polls.“The Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet and Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery must guarantee security of citizens this electioneering period,” he said as quoted by People Daily.Mungatana at the same time condemned the Wednesday attack on Mandera governor Ali Roba’s convoy. He said the attack raises concerns on security in the Northern region and other parts of the country.“If a governor’s convoy with all the security can be attacked then the country is not safe,” he added. The governor hopeful urged police to increase surveillance and smoke out criminal and terror agents.Meanwhile, Mungatana has warned politicians against dividing their supporters along tribal lines.Mungatana said divisive politics will cause animosity among Kenyans ahead of the polls and urged the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to act tough on hate mongers and inciters to ensure peaceful August 8 polls.
