Chairman of the Council of Governors, Peter Munya has defended the decision by the Coalition of Reformed Democracy to hold their rally at the Uhuru Park, Nairobi.
Munya who is the Meru Governor said all Kenyans are free to celebrate the day as they wish since it is a public holiday. He said Cord should therefore use the platform to celebrate Madaraka Day.
"The venue of the celebrations should not be a big deal. Governors are used to hosting Madaraka Day celebrations throughout the country and as a national holiday, each Kenyan has a right to spend the day as they please," Munya said.
'These celebrations are not only held within the county headquarters but also in Kenyan foreign embassies around the world. This shows how people value the the day. It is worth being celebrated,' he added.
He said there should be no limitation for anyone “as long as we are expressing our patriotism and unity in honour of our country".
The CoG also said the law has allowed every person to hold celebrations as governors usually hold such events both at the county and sub-county levels.
