Meru Governor Peter Munya was on Friday unanimously elected by PNU delegates to replace former president Mwai Kibaki as the party leader.

This was during the party's national delegates conference held at Bomas of Kenya.

PNU had earlier declined to merge with the newly formed Jubilee party after the registrar of political parties declined to recognize the dissolution.

The move came as a relief to Munya, who was seeking to replace Kibaki as the party's chairman, and field candidates for elective posts in the 2017 general election.
