Meru governor Peter Munya has defended his decision to skip President Uhuru Kenyatta's recent tour of Meru region.
Speaking on Monday, the outspoken county chief noted that he had chosen to avoid any backlash.
“I decided to go to the gym and relax because I was unwanted in the president’s meetings. But everywhere they went, the people shouted “Munya”. They realised that there are people who own this area. Meru also has its owners,” the governor said.
During the tour, Senator Kiraitu Murungi, who is also eyeing the county's gubernatorial seat was heckled down by Jubilee supporters, something that appeared not to go down well with the lawmaker who accused Munya of hiring goons to heckle him.
Munya has since dismissed Kiraitu's claims, warning the lawmaker against linking him to his political woes.
“The senator should open his eyes and see that the people have rejected him. He is always blaming me yet I am innocent,” he said.
