[Photo: NMG]The High Court has ordered the electoral commission to seal all the ballot boxes used in the August 8 General Election in Meru until the determination of a petition before it.Former Meru Governor Peter Munya had sought orders for the safeguarding of the ballot boxes, saying they might be tampered with before the hearing and determination of the case, to conceal evidence.Justice Francis Gikonyo issued the order on Tuesday in a case where Munya is challenging the election of the incumbent, Kiraitu Murungi, Nation reports.Munya's Lawyer Martin Gitonga had told the court during pleadings that he wanted to lock two warehouses where the electoral agency had stored the ballot boxes to protect the election materials. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), through lawyer Lucy Kamboni, did not oppose the application.Kiraitu, through lawyer Kioko Kilukumi, too, did not object to the application, saying it was the court’s obligation to safeguard the poll materials, Nation reports further. On the Kenya Integrated Elections Management Systems (Kiems) kits, the IEBC told the court they have been reconfigured.Munya seems determined to pursue the petition to the end despite President Uhuru Kenyatta's call on him last Friday during Jubilee campaign tour of Meru to drop the petition, assuring him a State job.Munya and his successor have, however, agreed to resolve their differences and work as a team to ensure Uhuru wins with a bigger margin on October 26 contest, which NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga withdrew from, on Tuesday.
