Meru governor Peter Munya has reaffirmed his commitment to his 2022 presidential bid.

The outspoken governor will face a host of other politicians who have already declared interest in the country's top seat, including Deputy President William Ruto who is seeking to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking on Saturday during a series of political meetings in Meru, Munya called on the rest of Mt. Kenya region to back his bid, arguing that the larger Meru region has never fielded a presidential candidate before.

“The larger Meru has never had an opportunity to field and support their own presidential candidate but we have been supporting our brothers from Central and Rift Valley. It is their time to support us in our 2022 bid,” he noted.

The immediate former Council of Governors chair further accused Deputy President William Ruto of frustrating his bid by sponsoring his rivals to unseat him.

Munya singled out Senator Kiraitu Murungi, who he has since branded Ruto's project.

Kiraitu is seeking to unseat Munya on a Jubilee Party ticket, whereas the incumbent will be looking to recapture his seat on a PNU Party ticket.
