Meru governor, Peter Munya wants the Senate to be scrapped for allegedly failing to accomplish its mandate as enshrined in the constitution and instead fighting devolution. The Council of Governor's chair said the Senate should be done away with for fighting devolved governments and being a wastage of public money. He said that most senators abdicate their duty to ensure that counties have funds and only target governors with false accusations. "Senators have a duty to make laws that touch on counties but they only focus on fighting governors as most of them are eyeing the same positions," said Munya. Speaking in Urru Stadium in Tigania West Sub County, Munya said that if and when a referendum is held in the country the senate must be scrapped. ''If there is a referendum that Kenya needs, it is one to scrap the Senate as it has become a wastage of public funds,"he added. In the past, senators have consistently called for constitutional amendments that give life and meaning to the Senate. Munya at the same time called on the national government to clear a debt of 2 billion shillings owed to counties by the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). He said that the national government did not consult them when they issued the Universal Insurance which has allegedly not helped anyone.
