According to citizentv.co.ke, Muriungi has stated he will be contesting for the Igembe South parliamentary seat currently held by Mithika Linturi.

Linturi is now eyeing the Meru senatorial post.

The deputy governor cited lack power to represent people directly as the reason he is abandoning his post.

He said he duty has mainly been representing his boss in functions when he is away or busy running other activities.

“The position I currently hold gives me no power to work for the people directly, it just involves representing the Governor in functions or working as his messenger,” he said during an interview with Muuga FM.

Muriungi said his relationship has not been too rosy adding that he will contest the parliamentary seat on a Democratic Party ticket.

He challenged other interested politicians to join the Democratic Party saying it will field candidates for all positions.

“The party is also supporting President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto's re-election bid,” he said during the interview.
