Following a gazette notice by Registrar of Political Parties Lucy Ndung’u, Party of National Unity (PNU) leader Peter Munya has termed the move a "blatant disregard of the law".
"The officials of the interested party in office as at 27th October, 2016 remain the bona fide office bearers of the interested party until a proper general meeting is held to elect national officials," read the notice in part.
According to the notice, former president Mwai Kibaki was listed as one of the PNU leaders along with other former officials.
On October 2016, Peter Munya was selected as the PNU leader during a National Delegates Conference despite disagreement by a number of officials.
“Any person with written submissions concerning the intended changes by the political party shall within seven days deposit them with the Registrar of Political Parties,” the notice reads.
Munya criticized the act and believes it is a political plot by the board ahead of 2022 politics.
“Our lawyers wrote to the registrar of political parties on Monday pointing out that a court order is in place stopping the ruling of the tribunal. We gave her 48 hours to correct the same with a new gazette. Our lawyer is moving to court on Thursday to cite her for contempt of she does not act by the closure of business Wednesday,” Mr Munya said as quoted by the Daily Nation.
Back in June 20, 2017 PNU officials were given a directive to leave office within seven days, however Munya and his team managed to secure a court order preventing their removal from office.
